Local Melton SEO is a great, untapped resource for businesses that want more customers. Before creating a kick-arse SEO strategy, the first step is to see how well your business is currently appearing in local results. To do this you cant just do a normal Google search...
- The Google beast is REALLY smart. It will tailor the search to things you want to see.
- The search terms your customers are using are much broader than you think.
- Google will show different results to people using a mobile than they will to people on a computer.
So how can you see the exact same search results that a potential customer would?
Step One: You need to go undercover...
Did you know that Google personalises your searches to show the results you'll like the most?
This means, if you've visited your own website a few times (and let's hope you have) then Google will automatically bump it up in the search results. Because Google thinks this is the website you want to see.
To get accurate search results, you need to go undercover with a 'private' browser. Private windows don’t save history or cookies, so your own preferences won’t influence your results.
With Chrome you select 'Incognito Window' with Firefox you select 'Start Private Browsing'.
Step Two: A search by any other name
Once you've got your private browser open, you'll want to do a basic search. Using the locksmith example those search terms would be 'melton locksmith'.
However, that's not where it ends. Despite the fact that melton locksmith makes perfect sense - your customers are probably searching with different key words.
To see what those words are, use a free tool to find out the most popular search terms that people have used.
In this case I used the free version of Keyword.io
Hint: If your search includes words that are definitely NOT relevant then use the negative keyword function. For example, a basic melton locksmith search returned suggested keywords that include Melton Mowbray. Incidentally, there are two places called Melton Mowbray (one in Tassie and the other in the UK) and right now we don't give a hoot about them. We're only interested in searching for locksmiths in Melton, Victoria. In this case, I entered Mowbray as a negative keyword so the results will exclude searches that suggest the word 'Mowbray'.
This search gave me 20 alternative search terms that people have used.
Now, to accurately check your business's Melton SEO results - you would paste this list into a spreadsheet. Then do an 'incognito' search for each of those keywords and make note of your business's ranking. If that seems like too much effort, just searching for the first few keywords will give you an idea of how Google is treating your website.
While you're doing this, don't get too hung up on any results that are not on the first page of Google. After all, how often do YOU bother clicking onto page two when you're searching for something?
What do you do if your business is not on the first page of Google?
It's a little disheartening isn't it?
To think you've put so much effort into your website and people cant find you when they're searching for the product or service you offer.
The good news is that the Google beast is constantly crawling the internet and rewards good websites by bumping them up in the search results. This means you can start improving your Melton SEO results today.
